UK Broadband
Written by Paradis (13-02-2007)
Until now, in the UK, if you wanted to switch internet broadband providers, it was a very tough, if not almost impossible situation, with providers delaying and using tactics to try to retain the customer for as long as possible. But all that is set to change on the 14th Fab, when the law changes, and makes the providers issue the Mac (Migration Authorisation Code) this is a 17/18 alphanumeric identifier that is issued to customers by the provider, the customer is trying to leave. This identifier is then passed to the new provider, so they know what line to switch.
But it isn't easy to get this code, providers hang on to them, because without a code, the customer is stuck and cannot switch over to a new provider. On top of this, the provider would charge for supplying the number, which is outragous. Well as from 14th Feb, this will change, not only will UK customers wishing to move supply be able to get their code within 5 days, the provider will not be able to charge to do it either, which is a big step forward in my opinion. If you wish to change your gas or electric supply, you just do it. You phone up and tell them, and it is done, no hassles. The broadband is just such a service, and should be treated in the same way. Now thankfully it will be.
