It was always thought, the giant carnivorous terror bird, Titanis walleri, became extinct as little as 10,000 years ago, but now a study suggests it was about two million years, meaning they never came face to face with Humans. The flightless species, T. walleri is thought to be the largest of the terror bird family, and would have stood 2m (7ft) tall and weighed 150kg (330lb) making them the top predator of the time.
By analysing fossils, they were able to determine the age of the bones. But the one mystery they haven't worked out, is how the flightless birds mygrated from South to North America, before the continents were joined. Read more here
Also in the news, is an ongoing debate about the possibility of reintroducing wild wolves to Scotland has been raging for a long time. Wild wolves were hunted to extinction in Scotland in the late 1700s, and since then the red deer population has grown and grown, and they are now at the maximum the eco system can cope with.
Forests just can't establish themselves with so many deer chewing away on the young saplings, the wolves would help to keep the deer under control. You can read more here
